Project Description
The new promenade on the Rhine embankment between St. Johann-Park and the French border in Basel is the perfect location for a leisurely stroll. The ARGE Rheinuferpromenade was awarded the contract to build the new promenade itself as well as various engineering structures.
This required the removal of several structures in a process consisting of multiple stages. In order to reinforce the height of up to twelve metres, various retaining walls and steps were erected across the entire building site and then clad with a natural-stone facade.
Special Features of the Project
A new footbridge with pile foundations was built in the Rhypark section of the promenade over the Rhine. This steel structure is equipped with a jetty for small boats and is connected by ramps to the existing structure for the Ueli ferry. Various platforms and floating steps were erected in the Rhine and floating equipment was used to install sheet pile walls.
Pre-fabricated concrete elements (6.8 t per unit) were applied to the existing sheet pile wall from the former port. The installation work was carried out from the pontoon and the retaining walls were filled with around 75,000 m3 of gravel mixture. For environmental reasons, most of the gravel was delivered by ship.
