The Rümlang AG (TAR) Refuelling Facility and the Zurich Airport AG Refuelling Facility (UBAG) operate a central distribution warehouse for products such as petrol, heating oil, diesel and jet fuel. Every year, TAR handles around 800 million litres of fuel at the site. As the main supplier for Zurich Airport, UBAG supplies the aviation hub with around 1.4 billion litres of jet fuel. All of the products delivered to the warehouse are transported by train on the organisation’s own rail network. An average of six block trains (carrying a total volume of approximately 9 million litres of fuel) are unloaded every day at the TAR UBAG facility.
The existing rail system, which is fully electrified and integrated into the SBB control centre, had to be renewed. The renewal is taking place in three stages between 2015 and 2017. This is to ensure that the fuel depot can remain fully operational throughout. In the first stage of the renewal project, both of the bypass tracks – numbers 85 and 86 – were renewed and the old wooden sleepers were replaced with B 06 FS concrete sleepers. In the next two stages, both of the sleeper nests were replaced. WALO carried out, coordinated and was responsible for all of the work, including adjustments to the overhead lines and the safety and automation systems.
