The objective of this project was to stop floating wood making its way into the boathouse where the police patrol boat is housed by the Rhine embankment in Grossbasel. WALO was awarded the contract to build a flotsam deflector. The system needed to be fully functional during both high tide and low tide. A 12-metre-long mechanical protective barrier was installed above the existing boathouse. Three dolphins (piles) were used to anchor the deflector to the riverbed.
A rake was positioned beneath the floating body to reduce the impact pressure on the system, to counteract the undercurrent and to prevent the formation of vortices. This rake holds back and deflects large pieces of flotsam.
