On 31 August 2015, a ceremony was held to celebrate the start of construction for the new Rhaetian railway company (RhB) Albula Tunnel in Preda. At approximately six kilometres long, the tunnel will sit more than 1,800 metres above sea level and be driven in from two sides. The objective of the project is to replace the existing Albula Tunnel, which was built more than 100 years ago. The new structure will comply with the latest tunnel specifications. Once the new tunnel has been opened, the old tunnel will be used as a safety mine gallery. The boring work is due to be completed by the end of 2017.
