Project Description

The new Tamedia building in Zurich was designed by Japanese star architect Shigeru Ban. He was approached by Pietro Supino, Chairman of Tamedia’s Board of Directors. On a visit to Long Island (USA), Supino saw one of Ban’s buildings and was very impressed.

The most impressive feature of the building is its support structure, which is made solely from spruce wood. The Surfatex Terrazzo flooring on the ground floor of the building is made from hand-sized stones taken from the watercourses of Ticino, Switzerland.

Construction process

Development: A 100-mm-thick pressure distribution slab (with underfloor heating) was installed as a floating raised floor with predetermined seams.

The finish was applied to the Terrazzo surface layer (thickness approximately 20 mm) using state-of-the-art grinding machines and diamond tools. CNS profiles were applied to the seam inserts.

Special Features of the Project

Great craftsmanship was required to lay the river-stone floor in an attractively appealing design whilst also fulfilling the technical requirements of a Surfatex floor.
